OUR DAILY BREAD

Matthew 17:21
However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”
The Bible says one day, a man came to kneel down before Jesus and begged Jesus to heal his son who suffered severely from epileptic seizures and often fell into the fire. He told Jesus to kindly have mercy and heal his son for Jesus' disciples couldn’t heal him. Immediately Jesus rebuked the demon and the boy was healed and freed. The disciples were amazed to experience such a miracle and approached Jesus to know the secret. Jesus replied to them, “ This kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”
Fasting and prayers are part of our kingdom’s source of power for effective Christian living but unfortunately, most believers don’t discern and acknowledge it. Jesus was successful in his ministry because of the foundation of fasting and prayers. (Matthew 4:2). Daniel's greatness was a result of fasting and prayers. In Daniel 9:3, he gave his attention to seeking the Lord in prayer and fasting.
The Bible also makes it clear that Queen Esther was able to break palace protocol and influenced the king to reverse Haman's evil plot against Mordecai and the entire Jewish people through fasting and prayers (Esther 4:16). In Ezra 8:21, the nation Israel had a safe journey to Jerusalem irrespective of bandits, robbers on the way through fasting and prayers.
My brethren, fasting and prayers are the key to our greatness in God's kingdom. Esther, Daniel, Nehemiah, and Ezra did greater things through fasting and prayers. This morning as Jesus told the disciples, may it be your counsel to practice fasting and prayers for there are some things only fasting and prayers can overcome.
Fasting suppresses the demands of the flesh, the natural man that could easily ensnare us to sin. Fasting helps us to renew our relationship with God and keeps us focused without distraction. It enables us to hear from God. Acts 13:3 Through fasting and prayers, they heard the voice of the Holy Spirit for directions.
May God, help you to fast occasionally, for your spiritual growth, Amen.
