BIBLE VERSE - Matthew 17:21
However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.
The Bible recounts a day when a desperate father approached Jesus, kneeling and pleading for the healing of his son suffering from severe epileptic seizures, often falling into the fire. Despite the disciples' inability to heal the boy, Jesus, upon the father's request, rebuked the demon, and the boy was immediately healed and freed. Witnessing this miracle, the disciples sought the secret, and Jesus responded, “This kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”
Fasting and prayer are integral to our kingdom power for effective Christian living. Regrettably, many believers fail to recognize and acknowledge their significance. Jesus' ministry, as highlighted in Matthew chapter 4 verse 2, was grounded in fasting and prayer, contributing to his success.
Daniel's greatness was similarly attributed to fasting and prayers, evident in Daniel 9:3, where he sought the Lord with dedication. Queen Esther, breaking palace protocol, influenced the king to reverse Haman's evil plot against Mordecai and the Jewish people through fasting (Esther 4:16). In Ezra 8:21, the nation of Israel experienced a safe journey amid potential dangers through fasting and prayers.
Fasting and prayers are the keys to our greatness in God's kingdom, as exemplified by Esther, Daniel, Nehemiah, and Ezra. Following Jesus' counsel to the disciples, may you prioritize practicing fasting and prayers, recognizing their unique ability to overcome challenges. Fasting suppresses the demands of the flesh, preventing us from easily succumbing to sin.
Additionally, fasting helps renew our relationship with God, maintaining focus without distractions and enabling us to hear from Him. Hannah's example, fasting and praying for a son, resulted in the birth of Samuel. Acts 13:3 highlights that through fasting and prayers, the disciples heard the voice of the Holy Spirit for guidance. May God empower you to incorporate occasional and consistent fasting into your spiritual journey for growth. Amen.
